Went to Wokano last night and must say that I am proud of my taste buds.I shared the:

-salmon carpaccio
-one small hot sake
-one baked crab hand roll
-one spicy yellowtail scallion
-one miso Soup

A fairly light meal for two. But that’s what we wanted. My absolute favorite item was the salmon carpaccio in ponzu sauce. $12 for 6 pieces of salmon atop a bed of daikon.

I initially wanted to order the Scallop carpaccio but they were sold out of that and Tuna for the night.I was pretty much in shock at my first bite. I was like woah. This is not normal ponzu. The menu said “salmon carpaccio with microgreens and ponzu” but there was nothing green and the wasn’t your standard ponzu. What I detected was the luxurious, but light taste of truffle oil. With each bite I just wanted to eat more of that sauce soaked daikon.

At the end of the night I checked with the staff, who confirmed that indeed had truffle oil. But…it is not listed in their regular menu. It sounds like it may be on their happy hour menu, and it lists truffle there. More please!

I didn’t care for any of the rolls. They were $6 each. Yellowtail was too spicy for me. And the baked crab looked like imitation crab and the mayo of the spicy mayo was too prominent for my taste.Miso soup was fine, lots of scallions, tiny cubes of tofu, seaweed. Nothing to complain about there. At $2.95 for a small sake we were able to squeeze 2 shots each. Not bad. This was on a promotion despite not being happy hour. The large may be a good value at 4.95.

I discovered Wokano has swapped out the salsa dancing floor for karaoke rooms starting at & $30/hour for up to 5 people as of one month ago. I believe the minimum spend is $50 for food. I am wondering if I ever took salsa lessons here… Still on a mission to find out.I am feeling inspired to find low calorie, nutritious, delicious foods/snacks/sides and make it myself. The salmon, daikon, truffle ponzu sounds perfect. My other ideas are:

-jicama with lime, salt and tajin
-Japanese cucumber salad with vinegar and toasted sesame seeds
-soft boiled egg in its own shell
-poached egg
